The Moon's craters

The attempts to explain the origins of crater on the surface of the Moon appeared from the end of 80-s of the 18th century. There were two main theories that were the volcanic one and the meteoric.

According to volcanic theory that was created by the German astronaut the Moon craters were created in the result of powerful eruptions on the surface of the Moon. But in 1824 another German astronaut made the meteoric theory according to which in the result of collision of the space object with the surface of the Moon, craters are formed as traces of the space objects.

From that time there were a lot of articles that tried to disprove this theory saying that craters have the round shape and if meteors hit the Moon surface then they must leave ellipsoid traces.

But in 1924 the scientists from New Zealand proved the meteoric precedence of the craters.

And in 1964 the final point was put to argues on the origins of the Moon craters. The landing on the Moon and the discovery of craters on other planets such as Mars, Mercury, Venus proved the meteoric precedence of craters. And the craters discovered on Venus are of volcanic origin but they differ from those of the Moon a lot. That is why the meteoric theory is considered to be socially accepted.

The whole surface of the Moon is covered with these craters. But there are a lot of scientists that find mystical explanations to craters.

One of the most extraordinary and interesting objects of the Universe is well-known satellite of our planet. From ancient times people tried to explore it, investigating its influence on people and nature. People always believed that the Moon is something mysterious and mystical. So, numerous stories and legends tell us about mystical origins of the satellite. The Moon is still unknown object that accompanies our planet.
